Air Law
1.5.7.3 Runway lighting
Runway lights are used when it is dark or when visibility is reduced. We can turn
on lights at unmanned airfields by pressing a number of times with the transmit
button on a specified frequency.
Runway edge lights are white
Runway end lights are red
Runway threshold lights are green
Taxiway edge lights are blue
Any taxiway center lights are green
1.5.7.4 Approach lights
To assist with visual approaches, some runways are equipped with:
- VASIS or
- PAPI Lights
The VASIS system consists of lights arranged along the
runway’s length.
The lights are constructed so that when viewed from a high
angle, they show white light. As you descend to a lower
altitude, the lights appear red. So, the goal is to be high enough
for the nearest light to appear white and low enough for the
furthest light to appear red. The landing will then occur
between these two lights.
VASIS stands for Visual Approach Slope Indicator System.
The PAPI system (Precision Path Indicator System)
consists of 4 lights placed side by side.
The color of the lights, red or white, works essentially the
same way as the VASIS system.
