3.2 The transponder
The transponder is a device that sits in the aircraft. In the school plane, they look
like the picture here:
The purpose of the transponder is to:
- Provide information to the air traffic service about where we are, who we
are and what altitude we are flying at
- Provide information to other aircraft about our position and altitude
- Allow us to send signals in case of radio failure, emergency or hijacking
As a radio operator, you may be asked to operate the transponder, so it is
important that you familiarize yourself with how it works and how to operate it.
Here is the display of an old-fashioned
primary radar screen.
There are quite a few planes in the air, they
are shown as white spots. One of the white
spots, the one with a red ring around it, might
be our plane, OY-TLA. It's located southeast of
downtown in the radar, but Tower can't be
completely sure.
