Have Faith

One of the big things that the Bible has taught me is that rocks
and stones are symbols of strength. Something which I thought
about recently watching the news. Without getting political
With Paul or airing my own personal views, one particular passage keeps
ringing out to me. “The stone the builders rejected has become
the capstone” (Psalm 118:22). Such a powerful passage.

This passage alone has got me thinking again. The passage
More Stones... refers to how God looks for the meek and for those who have
sinned on which to build his church. Those that are at the
top of the pile, if you like, and consider themselves righteous,
The British coastline is such a beautiful place, Rugged, raw, are not the ones who are called. That brings me to my other
spectacular, historic, just a few words that are used to describe favourite verse which kind of ties in with that, “It is not the
it. I’ve been pretty lucky in my life because an awful big part of healthy who need a doctor, but the sick”. Luke 5:31.
my life has been spent living near to the sea.
In our world of high competition and race to the top, it’s
Just recently, my partner and I moved back to a coastal town in comforting to know that it’s OK to have faults and to be
the North East of England and to be honest, we couldn’t have imperfect. In fact, in God’s eyes, that’s how he wants you.
made a better choice. Almost every day we are walking on the
beach with our faithful four legged beast taking a bit of time So I sit on my rocks on the beach, that are far from perfectly
out. Most dogs there like to jump in the water and splash about shaped and have just been dumped there as part of projects to
and have fun while our strange mutt thinks himself a mountain stabilise the coastline and I consider their purpose. Nobody
goat and loves to climb the rocks. We still can’t see what he pays them any mind, yet they are there everyday protecting us
finds so fascinating in them but it keeps his tail wagging so we from the ravages of the sea and stabilising our coast.
        just cautiously monitor them.
So I ask myself a question. Which is the more valuable and
It’s funny, no matter where I end up, I seem to find myself useful? The worthless rock strengthening out sea defences and
talking about stones and rocks. For those that read my ‘Have giving protection or the most perfect cut diamond sitting in a
Faith’ publications may remember my reflection called ‘Stones’. ring doing nothing more than just looking pretty.
I referred to a number of Bible passages where stones and rocks
are mentioned. The more I read the Bible, the more I find them. Just something to think about...
