Belongings
It is best to bring people upstairs in gowns. There is less of a chance they will have
belongings hidden on their person. Please follow the proper search procedures. Do not
assume MHESU did a good search.
All belongings need to be documented and labeled. PICU patients are very concerned about
having their belongings taken and we need to make sure nothing gets lost or thrown out.
Make yourself familiar with the contraband list. It is especially important in PICU.
Room searches are to be done each shift with two nurses. You are looking for contraband
or anything that the patient could use to harm themselves or others. Rooms should be
ready for a potential restraint event.
Food should not be hoarded in rooms – particularly yogurt and milk, remove juice lids
because the foil can be used for self-harm
Patients are allowed minimal belongings in their rooms. Magazines, books and paper are
ok. Pencils/markers should be used in the lounge only, under supervision, so we don’t get
graffiti on walls. No sharps, no cords. Extra clothing can be kept in their cupboard in the
utility room. Please label all belongings.
Patients are not to be given jewelry that is in security or their blue bin – especially chains,
large rings, large bracelets or earrings
Document jewelry by object, shape and colour – don’t assume it is gold, diamond etc
Patients are not to be given access to scented products.
Shaving, nail clipping etc must all be done under your supervision. In some cases, you may
need to do it for your patient. Lucy, HCA, keeps an electric shaver and hair trimmer in her
locker, if required.
Patients can only have access to their cell phone or computer with a doctor’s order. They
must use their phone in their room and not in public spaces. Cords are not to be left in
rooms, all charging should be done in the nursing station. No photos or video is permitted.
