Preface
In more than 30 years of advising retirees, I’ve learned that there
are really just two ways that people live in retirement.
The first group of people have invested, saved, and planned
their way to what should be a comfortable retirement. They
hadn't
have set aside money in their retirement plans in good times
and bad. They’ve kept their investments relatively constant
through both good times and bad. They haven’t moved all
of their money into cash or money markets when the stock
market dropped. They have kept an eye on what’s going on in
the economy, but they have also resisted the urge to act on it,
whether things are going well or in times of trouble.
As I’ve witnessed over my career, these retirees spend
their days traveling, golfing, gardening, fishing, dining out, or
delete comma
spending time with friends, family, and grandchildren. They call
me to ask if there is anything that I need them to do, because
they will be on a cruise for two weeks and will be away from
phone or email contact. They call me to apologize for not
returning my emails sooner, explaining that they just spent 10
days visiting their children and grandchildren in another part
