Filamentous Bacteria
Filaments are bacteria that grow end to end. This is a survival mechanism, giving
the chain of bacteria more surface area when there is low dissolved oxygen, or
when there is a large microorganism population and not enough food.
Eventually the filaments extend from floc mass to floc mass causing poor settling,
this is known as floc bridging.
The best control of filaments is to change the growth environment and prevent
foam trapping.
