English vs. Metric cont.
In treatment plants, chemicals are usually added to water at an extremely small rate. The list below
compares a couple of English units to Metric units.
Metric English
10 mg/L → 0.0000833
lbs./gal
10 mL/min. → 0.1587 gal/hour
10,000 mg/L → 0.0834 lbs./gal
As you can see, in these situations metric becomes the much easier system to use. Additionally, at this
magnitude, it is the more accurate unit.
Unfortunately, much of the equipment used in a treatment plant is measured in the English system.
Therefore, an operator of a water plant must be able to use both systems interchangeably.
