Metric System Common Units & Unit Prefixes
The base units used in the Metric system consist of the following.
Mass: grams or g
Distance: meters or m
Volume: liters or L
Temperature: degrees Celsius or °C
Using these base units of measure, prefixes are added to indicate the magnitude. The
most common unit prefixes operators will use include:
- Kilo-, meaning thousand (1,000) and denoted by “K”
- Milli-, meaning thousandth (0.001) and denoted by “m”
