                              Natural-orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is an emerg-
                              ing area of surgery that began in 2004 when Dr Anthony Kalloo and his
                              colleagues at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA) reported
                              on the results of using a flexible endoscope to enter the abdominal cavity
                              through  the  stomach  and  perform  procedures  in  pigs  (Kalloo  et  al.,
                              2004). We have recently begun experiments on the potential benefits of
                              this approach for animals and our preliminary results indicate that dogs
