                            to complement receptors on red blood cells. They are then carried
                                to the liver, where they are transferred to Kupffer cells for
                                phagocytosis. In the absence of complement components,
                           significant accumulation of immune complexes occurs in tissues. In
                            other mammals immune complexes bind to receptors on platelets.
