There are two distinct pathways in mouse anaphylaxis: one

mast cells induce acute inflammation, basophils probably mediate

more long-term allergic states such as chronic allergic dermatitis as
               well as the late-phase reaction.
Basophils can initiate allergen- and helminth-driven type 2
immune responses by functioning as antigen-presenting cells.

Basophils can capture antigen through FcR-bound antibodies. They
endocytose, process, and present soluble antigens but not
particulate antigens. IL-4 and IL-6 drive Th2 cell differentiation and
as a consequence promote IgE responses. Basophils play a

protective role in helminth, tick, and bacterial infections; they
degrade toxins in venoms; and they contribute to tumor rejection.
