This technique is good for repeated injections, especially if it is not safe to inject the gluteals.
It has the advantage that if the injection site swells, it is less debilitating than at other sites.
VetBooks.ir The area to inject is in the muscle on either side of the breastbone (Figure 25.13). Your vet
will show you the best place. The needle is inserted by tapping the horse as described
previously, then inserting it in a horizontal direction.

Injecting foals
Young foals should not be injected in the neck, as any subsequent stiffness will discourage
them from sucking. The muscles of the rump or the back of the thigh are the most commonly
used sites. They must be free from faecal contamination. Expert restraint is absolutely
essential.
Always complete a course of antibiotics, even if the horse appears to be better.
