allow access to the abnormal horn (Figure 6.63). The exposed soft tissues are packed with
iodine dressings. The hoof is stabilized by applying a bar shoe with clips on either side of the
VetBooks.ir defect. If the lesion is extensive, a metal plate is screwed across the defect to aid stability.
Once the exposed laminae are dry and there are no concerns about recurrence of the tumour,
the defect may be filled in with an acrylic resin. At this stage the horse can start work. The
defect grows out over 6–12 months.

Prognosis
The prognosis is good if the entire tumour is removed and the foot can be adequately
stabilized. The tumour will regrow if any abnormal tissue remains.
