Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made on the clinical signs and the results of an ultrasongraphic examination.
Scanning is essential to determine the site and the extent of the damage as it is not always
possible to ascertain this by feeling the leg. It should be delayed until at least 4 days after the
injury occurs for a true picture of the damage to be obtained. If examined earlier than this, the
swelling makes it difficult to appreciate fibre damage. Both limbs are usually examined as
degenerative changes will often be found in the other leg as well.
