•    In severe cases it can spread to the upper limbs and trunk.

        •    If left untreated, the lesions coalesce and become large open sores with matted hair which

             Dermatophilus congolensis.

        •    Long-standing infestations can lead to thickened skin with a rather greasy appearance.



        Diagnosis

        Diagnosis is made on the clinical signs and can be confirmed by the presence of mites in

        brushings of scurf from the skin, collection on transparent adhesive tape or skin scrapes taken
        by the vet. They are easily visible when examined under a microscope (Figure 18.14).
