             Unlike  verrucose  papillomas,  aural  plaques  do  not  disappear  on  their  own.  Once  they

        have developed they are present for the life of the horse. In most cases they are painless and
        treatment should be avoided as interference and repeated applications of creams can make a

        horse  or  pony  very  head  shy.  Occasionally  the  plaques  cause  discomfort  and  have  been
        associated with headshaking.



        PROGNOSIS AND PREVENTION

        The  prognosis  for  resolution  is  poor.  Many  horses  and  ponies  with  this  condition  resent
        having their ears handled, probably due to previous and inappropriate interference with the
