  Buntline fisherman’s bend: secures slippery ropes when a bucket hitch or fisherman’s bend is not

  sufficient. The knot is formed by starting with a bucket hitch (see page 24), to the point after the end
  has been worked tight and before a half hitch is made on the standing part. Take the end down around
  the standing part, then back across itself towards the initial round turn, before taking a second turn
  around the standing part in the same direction as the first. Then tuck the end up between the turns,

  forming a clove hitch (figure 19.1). The knot can then be worked tight. We recommend an alternative
  finish when you are using a slippery rope (figure 19.2), whereby after tying the standard basic hitch
  (figure 19.1) you tuck back the working end into the lay of the standing part.
