commercial Rialto area and Marco Polo’s house (of course, Venice’s most famous merchant
wasn’t home much, given his extensive business travels). As you can see, there are many
options for this insider’s perspective of Venice; Michele will help you prioritize. Please note that
this is very much a tour of exteriors and typically does not include interiors.

For this afternoon, we have included skip-the-line tickets to St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s
Palace. You will skip the lines of those waiting to get into the basilica. Explore the interior on
your own, which is quite splendid. The gilded Byzantine mosaics are highly memorable.
Appreciate the stunning Pala d’Oro, which is an altarpiece commissioned by the doge in the
early twelfth century and, in part, illustrates the story of St. Mark. You might cap the day at
Harry’s Bar, a local institution that is the birthplace of the Prosecco-based Bellini.

Visit the Doge’s Palace, which was the
headquarters of all the political institutions of the
                                                            Venetian Republic, including the justice
department, complete with jail cells and the
famous Bridge of Sighs, where prisoners took
their last walk. The palace was also the residence
of the Doge or Duke. Completed in 1420, the
Doge’s Palace is an exceptional example of
Gothic civic architecture and features rich
decorations and frescoes by Veronese, Tintoretto
               and other Venetian masters.
