Ivan Boormatov was born in 1944, the year the first workshops at Revda
were built. He was the second of five children of an ordinary peasant
family. After service in the army Ivan graduated from the Urals Polytechnic
Institute. From there he went to work at a copper smelting plant. After 15
years there, in 1979, he joined the Revdan enterprise as chief engineer.
In 1990 he became the Director.
The Revda enterprise, in the Central Urals was established in 1948. The
area is rich in natural resources and has a history of industrial activity
stretching back to the late 18th Century. In 1995 the enterprise employed
some 1250 workers of whom 430 were visually disabled. Its location was
such that it served an immediate regional market of 4.5 million people, 1.5
million of these lived in Ekaterinburg, some 30 kilometres to the east.
