The Case Method
The case study method was pioneered at the Harvard
Business School and is, to all intents and purposes, a form
of:
Problem Based Learning
This teaching approach is based on using case studies that
force decision making by the users to devise, defend,
discuss, and refine solutions to problems encountered in
the case study.
The case method is a teaching, learning philosophy that
combines knowledge acquisition with significant student
involvement.
“The case method is based on a philosophy of professional
education which associates knowledge directly with action
(Boehrer, 1995). This philosophy rejects the doctrine that
students should first learn passively, and then, having
learned, should apply knowledge. Instead, the case method
is based on the principle that real education consists of the
cumulative and unending acquisition, combination and
reordering of learning experiences.”
