Skills required for the Newsroom of the Future comprise elements such as:
▪ Multimedia storytelling skills
▪ Data and statistical skills for storytelling.
▪ Audience development skills
▪ Basics of programming.
▪ The business of media.
In the past news gathering meant purchasing news wires from agencies, now it
included emailed photos and videos from the public, automatically captured
audio and video from other stations, blog sites, and RSS feeds as well as self-
generated copy. Managing this plethora of news sources meant that the editor
had to inform the journalists that they were working together on a story? For
journalists this might pose a problem in terms of what photo do they drag and
drop into the copy and can they adapt such photos through appropriate
software? Furthermore, will they know which audio clips are available on the
radio playout system? Finally, how are the different renditions of the same
story distributed e.g. to web, newsprint, radio, TV, SMS and MMS, and
should they be distributed at the same time or sequenced?
