The landscape of education provision pre-COVID-19 was
changing as the application of technology impacted on
course delivery. Innovation in online technology was
opening the door to new forms of learning. How then would
these views impact upon the case method and its position in
teaching? The case study and the case method hold a
tremendous potential for bringing life, reality, credibility and
utility to the pedagogic process. On-line, interactive,
multimedia case studies are still in their infancy but their
potential for melding into the changing landscape of higher
education is extremely high. They provide both a vehicle and
platform for developing active self-learning. However, this is
not without a cost which both lecturer and institutions may
not be willing to meet.
The emergence of COVID-19 was a driver of change
impacting with a violent step change directly on the
educational landscape. It forced educational institutions to
switch their delivery from face-to-face to online through the
application of new technologies (Diagram 10). Consequently,
the case method faced the prospect of radical
transformation at a point when it was ill set up.
