Marmite-Gate - “love it, or hate it!”
On 23 June, 2016, the
UK voted to leave the
European Union. On
the back of this
Unilever decided to
increase the wholesale
price of Marmite by
about 10% because of
the fall in value of
sterling against the
euro and dollar stating
that, “Prices should
start increasing to
reflect the higher
import costs from sterling, subject to customer
affordability.”
In response Tesco removed Unilever products - Marmite,
Dove soap and Hellmann’s mayonnaise from its online
store. The dispute was resolved after a day of blanket media
coverage.
