P. 72
John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the
words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
John 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from
the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
John 6:65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come
unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
Lesson Notes:
(John 6:63) – Speaking to His entire audience, the Son of God (God actively present on earth)
explains the distinction between the spirit and the flesh in response to the negative reactions to
about consuming His flesh. The spirit (pneuma: breath, blast of God) breathes life into the flesh.
The flesh alone is unprofitable (fruit-less) and life-less. The words that the Messiah has spoken
are “spirit” in nature and filled with life.
(John 6:64) – Some were present that would not allow the spirit of God to breathe upon them
and therefore would not be responsive to the truth. Reception to divine truth is inspired,
influenced by the breath of God awakening man to the revelation of truth. One example of
this principle is found in Matthew 16:17, when Jesus-Messiah told Peter that flesh and blood
did not have the power to reveal divine truth, when the disciple’s declared that He was the
Christ.
The Son of God (God actively present on earth) knew from the beginning of His ministry who would
allow the Spirit of God to bring them to the truth. He traveled intentionally to Samaria because
He knew the breath of God would bring a woman of Sychar to accept the truth about herself
and God. The same spirit gave revelation to the lame man of 38 years and others that the
Messiah found ways to engage.
He was also aware of who would betray Him inviting those like Judas to follow Him in ministry
knowing that an occasion of betrayal was inevitable.
(John 6:65) – Man comes to God by invitation. Jesus-Messiah, verbalized the invite, saying:
“come unto me all ye that labor…” (Matthew 11:28). Attempts are made by men to find God,
seeking Him using man-made pathways to gain access to His divine presence. God creates the
path that makes Him accessible to man and invites man to find Him, draw near, and come close
to Him. (Isaiah 55:6)
The audience of Jews have tried to dictate the terms which would constrain the path and
actions for the Messiah to prove His identity to them. Their actions are refuted as they learn
that no man can come to the Son of God (God actively present on earth) except the Father (God
actively present in Heaven) gives them access.
John 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no
more with him.
John 6:67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
John 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?
thou hast the words of eternal life.
