P. 77
John 7:6- Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your
time is alway ready.
John 7:7- The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of
it, that the works thereof are evil.
John 7:8- Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my
time is not yet full come.
John 7:9- When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in
Galilee.
John 7:10- But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto
the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
Lesson Notes:
(John 7:6) – The Messiah reuses the rebuke spoken to His mother, telling His siblings His time is
not yet come. His refusal to comply with their terms for attending the feast, affirms He is
subject only to the will of God. He was not distracted to turn His attention on proving Himself
to His siblings; He was obligated to a greater mission.
He correctly shifts the proof test from Himself to His brethren; it is their time to accept or reject
Him. He has lived with them for thirty years. As their Elder, they have seen evidence of His
identity for their entire life. While He will continue to prove Himself among those outside of the
residence, His brethren needed to make their decision in the present moment.
(John 7:7-9) – The world outside of their residence would hate Him but He would not allow His
brothers and family to be hated or pay a penalty for His mission to testify against work of evil in
the world. He tells His brethren to attend the feast without Him because His time is not fully
come.
He will make His way to the feast after they depart, traveling alone perhaps insulate His
brothers from any harm or danger He might encounter. He re-states His premise that it is not
His time adding that it is not come to “full” term, suggesting He is closer to the time but there is
more He is to accomplish before He surrenders Himself as a sacrafice.
He ends the conversation with His brothers and remains in Galilee after their departure.
(John 7:10) “When His brethren were gone up” – He gives them time to arrive in Jerusalem and
then makes His departure. The norm for families traveling up to Jerusalem was to make the
journey together, joining with other families along the way. Providing every precaution for the
safety of His family, the Messiah travels alone and in secrecy attends the feast.
