(John 7:29-30) – The Messiah makes three important claims: “I know him, I am from him, and I
am sent by him”. He first claims that He knows the one who sent Him.

Teaching Note: The word “know” is the Greek verb “eido” which is naturally used in the past
tense, meaning that He has always been aware of the one who sent Him. The meaning
stretches further to imply that the one speaking perfectly knows the subject matter.

He declares that He is “from” him, as in comes out from Him. His knowledge of him is qualified
by the His position or place he has with him. The placement illustrates that He is beside, in, and
within his proximity, making them one and the same.
The final claim of the Messiah qualifies His presence in the world: “He was sent by him”. The
meaning for the word sent comes from Greek word, “apostello” which means set apart, sent
out, or set forward. The Messiah is God sent and God sent Himself to be present in the world.
The Messiah is not sent on behalf of God; the Messiah is the part of God sent out to the world.

John 7:30- Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him,
because his hour was not yet come.
John 7:31- And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ
cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

               Lesson Notes:

(John 7:30-31) – The religious leaders eventually made plans to take the Messiah into custody,
especially after such the explicit revelation to qualify Himself as the Christ. Their plans were
limited as they pursued or tried to arrest Him, but the text does not explain why they were
halted. John annotates simply that His time was not yet come.

The venture of Jesus-Messiah making the journey to the feast, after being ridiculed by His
family is rewarded with many people being turned to believe He was indeed the Christ. They
were resolved to accept Him because they did not believe anyone would come after Him
making the same claim could do more miracles than performed by Him.

John 7:32- The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things
concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take
                                                            him.
John 7:33- Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and
then I go unto him that sent me.
John 7:34- Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am,
                                                thither ye cannot come.
John 7:35- Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that
we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and
                                                   teach the Gentiles?
                                                                                                           79
