P. 84

John 7:44- And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid
                                                      hands on him.
John 7:45- Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and
they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

John 7:46- The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
John 7:47- Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
John 7:48- Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
John 7:49- But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

               Lesson Notes:

(John 7:44-46) – The temple officers did not take Him into custody as instructed by the religious
leaders. When they returned to the temple without Him, they were severely questioned. The
defense of the officers was solely based upon the claims they heard, made by the Messiah.
They were Jewish and residents of the community where they officially serve, and they had
never heard someone speak like Him.

(John 7:47-48) – The Pharisees angrily respond challenging their faith and allegiance to the
temple, asking them if they have been deceived by His teaching. The make the point that they
have never voiced confidence or belief in the man Jesus. Clearly, they expected the officers to
set aside any personal convictions in full support of the religious system governed by their
superiors without respect to outside influences.

(John 7:49) – The opinions of people considered to be unlearned and unfamiliar with Torah law
were judged as being cursed. The soldiers were expected to maintain their allegiance to the
Rabbinic teachings of the temple and the religious system to which they had sworn an oath to
               physically guard and protect.
