P. 85
John 7:50- Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night,
being one of them,)
John 7:51- Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what
he doeth?
John 7:52- They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee?
Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
John 7:53- And every man went unto his own house.
Lesson Notes:
(John 7:50-51) – Nicodemus was religious ruler that had also secretly recognized Jesus-Messiah
as a teacher sent from God. He had not yet made public his private opinions about the Teacher
but used the moment to challenge his peers in respect to Torah law they all held in high
esteem. They are reminded that the teachings of Torah require them to hear a person before
judging him guilty.
(John 7:52) – Speaking out placed Nicodemus in the spotlight of judgment when his peers rail
sarcastically asking if he is also a resident of Galilee to determine if he is siding with the
outsiders making claims that God has selected the Messiah from an unlearned, cursed
population.
The temple leaders challenge Nicodemus to search the scriptures and determine if a text is
found to support a prophet rising up out of Galilee.
(John 7:53) – Nothing is formally settled on the matter, each man, leaves the temple and
returns to their home. No further plans are set forth to take the Galilean into custody.
