John 8:1- Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:1) – After leaving the temple during the Rosh Hashana, Jesus-Messiah retreats to the
Mount of Olives. The small, 2710-foot ridge, east of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, is a part
of the Judean Mountains along the Kidron Valley. The olive groves that once covered the
mountain slopes inspired the mountain’s name but for more than 3000 years it has served as
cemetery to Jewish families burying their dead in the pathway leading to the eastern entry of
the temple; which is noted as the roadway the eternal King of Israel (Messiah) would use to re-
enter the city restore His Kingdom. (Ezekiel 44:1-3) It is also noted as the place Jesus-Messiah
ascended to heaven just before the celebration of Pentecost. (Acts 1:12)
At the base of the Mount of Olives is Gethsemane, the place Jesus-Messiah used often to pray
and known significantly as the place where He prayed before being taken into custody to be
crucified. (Matthew 26:36, Mark 14:32)
Teachers Note: The gate was forcibly closed by the Muslims in 810 and later reopened in by the
Anglican Crusaders in 1102. Later during the Holy Wars, it was walled again by Egyptian Sultan,
Saladin, the great political and military leader. Ottoman Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent
rebuilt the city walls including the gateway but decided to seal the entry later in 1541 as a
defensive mechanism to protect the city. The Ottomans also built the first cemetery at the
base of the mountains, a practice that would be inherited by the Jews that would return to the
homeland 400 years later.
John 8:2- And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all
the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
John 8:3- And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken
in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
John 8:4- They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in
the very act.
John 8:5- Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be
stoned: but what sayest thou?
John 8:6-This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him.
But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though
he heard them not.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:2) – The Messiah returns to the temple, on the next day, early in the morning. The
Jewish day would begin early in the morning with the first of two daily lamb sacrifices known as
the Tamid Offering. Prayer was also a part of the early morning routine and Shacharit, the
Hebrew term for morning prayer, was the first of three daily prayers. Jews across Israel and
