world, but many would not know Him and ultimately would reject Him. (John 1:9-10)
The son of God re-presents Himself as the illumination to show men the truth.
In the first “I am” declaration the Messiah described Himself as the “Bread of Life”; the true
bread from heaven in contrast to the manna that settled upon the ground in the wilderness.
The second “I am” declaration compels His audience to accept Him as the “Light of the world”
in contrast to the false, deceptive, light already present in the world.
The false light in the world appeared as the serpentine, an angelic, first illustrated in Genesis.
The Hebrew word used for serpent in Genesis 3:1 is “nachash” associated with the Chaldean
word that means “brilliant one”. In Ezekiel the description of the serpentine is expanded to
include an anointed seraph (heavenly angelic), full of beauty, and brightness. (Ezk. 28:13-17)
Speaking to the remnant audience still present after the woman’s accusers departed, the son of
God announced that He is the true light of the world to lead those that will follow out darkness
to walk in the light of life. The brilliant light of the “nachash” (the god of this world) blinds the
spiritual eyes and minds of men to prevent them from seeing the truth. (IICor. 4:4)
Jesus-Messiah has come to open the eyes of the blind, physically and spiritually to allow them
to see the truth and find true life. (Luke 4:18)
John 8:13- The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of
thyself; thy record is not true.
John 8:14- Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of
myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go;
but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
John 8:15- Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
John 8:16- And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but
I and the Father that sent me.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:13) –After another failed attempt to snare the Messiah by using the questionable
adultery accusation against the woman, the religious leaders are searching for another
adversarial attack. They began to push on a verification technicality that requires dual witness
validation. Jewish law requires authentication by more than one witness to make a claim true.
The Pharisees in the audience push back against the proposed declaration, claiming that He is
sent by God to be the light of the world. They challenge the veracity of His claim because He is a
lone witness, which would be forbidden by the law.
The Pharisee’s entrapment against the woman failed because there were no valid witnesses
among her accusers. In a highly hypocritical gesture, the temple leaders strike back by
challenging the Messiah with making declarations of truth without a witness to verify His
