John 8:31- Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye
continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
John 8:32- And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:31) – To the Jews that believed His words, the Rabbi offers instructional guidance. If
they will continue in His word they will become true (indeed) disciples. Six months earlier
hundreds of followers walked away from Jesus-Messiah because they could not accept the
terms to consume His words as living bread. The requirement for being a “true” disciple is
disclosed from the beginning to the newcomers in this audience. Each new follower must
continue (abide/endure), and remain if indeed, they will be a disciple.
(John 8:32) – To those that will continue the truth they know will make them free. Knowing the
truth is a reaction to the exposure of light. When exposed to revealed truth, the exposure will
either draw a person in or drive them away. Those drawn in that continue in the truth they
know are made free: gradually released from the un-truths in this world, released to embrace
the truth that deception in this world has hidden, and liberated (exempt) from the ceremonial
liability of religion.
John 8:33- They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in
bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
John 8:34- Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever
committeth sin is the servant of sin.
John 8:35- And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son
abideth ever.
John 8:36- If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free
indeed.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:33-34) – The representatives of religion verified their bondage, making claims that they
were never spiritually incarcerated. They believed that heritage protected them from sin;
unaware that deception makes men believe they don’t need to be saved. The teacher begins to
explain that anyone that is under the power of sin or commits sin, meaning to abide in
agreement with sin is a bond-servant to sin. No one living in sin is free, that is the lie and
deception of sin.
(John 8:35) – A servant has limited to access to a house where they serve. In the same manner
a servant to sin has limited access to the eternal presence of God. In the same way religion
provides very limited access to God through its ceremonial rituals. Until men are free from
religion, they will not recognize their personal need for God because the rituals will keep them
craving an ongoing relationship with Him.
