John 9:4- I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day the
night cometh, when no man can work.

John 9:5- As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

               Lesson Notes:

(John 9:4) – The Rabbi makes the concern about the blind man personal, by stating, “I must
work…”. Selecting the blind man was not a random act of miracle kindness; this was the
intentional work of the Messiah. Work is an assigned or ascribed occupation, composed of an
ongoing task with an expected outcome. The Son God (God actively present on earth) was sent (sent
Himself) to do the work of redemption with an expected outcome to exchange man’s death
               sentence for eternal life.
The Messiah outlined the time parameter of His assignment: “I must work… while it is day”.
Generally, the word day used in scripture is more than a reference to a standard twenty-four-
hour cycle. The term could be a reference to a specific hour or portion of a twenty-four-hour
cycle or period of days combined. The larger emphasis when the term was used was intended
to define a fixed time period of a specific event or the amount of time before something
               expired.
The Messiah indicates that the work of redemption is governed by a specific time period
without defining how much time was allocated. He does makes it clear that night or the end of
day will come, the work period for redemption will expire and no man will be able to respond
               to the call to repent.
(John 9:5) – The Son God (God actively present on earth) had a fixed period of time to remain in the
world and while present He was the light in the world illuminating the truth about Himself and
the word of God. When He is present the truth is illuminated, openly presented to the whole
world and not just to a small subset of self-empowered religious leaders. He came into the
world to be a light in man, constantly present to give him life. (John 1:4)
Pastor Note: work used here reflects man’s response to the work of God in his life; turning
away from sin towards salvation; away from work of death in response to the work of life. God
is working in man and man is co-laborer in the good work God is performing inside him. (*ICor.
