P. 107
The son became weary of the deposition and angrily pushed back making it clear that he would
not continue repeating himself, noting that they have already heard him and do not believe
him. He mocks their desire to know more, asking if they would become disciples of the prophet
healer if they heard his testimony again.
(John 9:28-29) – The defiance of the son incensed the Pharisee leaders, defending their
religious standing and declaring to be disciples of the revered Moses while charging the son
with being a disciple of the man Jesus.
The response of the Pharisees further reveals their overwhelming confidence in Moses,
celebrating him as the man God spoke to directly, as they degrade Jesus to be no more than a
man with an uncertain origin.
John 9:30 - The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a
marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath
opened mine eyes.
John 9:31 - Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be
a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
John 9:32 - Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened
the eyes of one that was born blind.
John 9:33 - If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
Lesson Notes:
(John 9:30 -31) – The son rebuts with a stronger retort. Sarcastically he marvels over their
admission that they do not know where the healer comes from, yet they are certain He is an
ungodly sinner. Jewish practitioners believe that sinners are voice-less before God, the son
addresses this cultural truth raising concern as to how can anyone except a worshipper of God
and a person that God will hear could do such miracles.
(John 9:32 -33) – Since the beginning of the world, declares the son, no one among the Jews has
ever heard of man receiving his sight after being born blind. He raises a rational objective with
his challengers, how could a man that is not from God perform such miracles.
