(John 9:20-21) – The parents certify their son’s identity but admit they are unable to offer any
explanation about the miracle responsible for giving him sight. They only know what they have
heard in their son’s testimony and they advise the Pharisees to question him because he is of
age.
(John 9:22-23) – A foot note is added to the account providing background on the parents
response. They were fearful of the reprisals from their Jewish elders and leaders if they
corroborated the miracle. Jewish leaders set consequences including expulsion from the
synagogue for anyone that publicly confessed Jesus as the Christ (Anointed One/Messiah).
For these reasons they pushed the liability of proof upon the son’s testimony already before
the Pharisees adding nothing more to it.
John 9:24- Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto
him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
John 9:25- He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know
not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
Lesson Notes:
(John 9:24-25) – The Pharisee recall the son to pronounce their judgment on the evidence they
have heard. The leader among them reiterates their public position, charging Jesus as a sinner.
Their ruling prompted a decision to demand the son to give God the praise for the miracle that
has gave him sight for the first time since birth.
It would be impossible for them to deny a miracle that had become so public. Denouncing Jesus
as a sinner required them to discredit anything that could affirm His identity such as giving sight
to man that was born blind. The option left to them was to discredit the man Jesus for the
healing and prevent Him from being celebrated for the miracle.
John 9:26 - Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened
he thine eyes?
John 9:27 - He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not
hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
John 9:28 - Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we
are Moses' disciples.
John 9:29 - We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we
know not from whence he is.
Lesson Notes:
(John 9:26-27) – The interrogation continues with the Pharisees drilling for more specifics
pertaining to the miracle, likely looking for any wrinkle they can use to add to the charges of
violating the Sabbath.
