claims.
(John 8:14) –The son of God affirms that He is indeed bearing record Himself, specifically
because no one present could validate the truth about His origin or destiny because the
creature cannot inform its creator. He alone is qualified to know eternal truth and therefore
the only witness present to declare the truth.
(John 8:15-16) – The Pharisees are judges limited to matters of the flesh with no access to the
divine. They are accustomed to judging the outcome of men but cannot see into the prophetic
plans of God. If the Son of God were to position Himself to judge the matters of the men (the
flesh) His judgment would prevail because the Father (God actively present in Heaven) is with Him
and will sustain any judgement He makes. In due time, the task to judge all humanity will
come. (Matthew 16:27)
John 8:17- It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is
true.
John 8:18- I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent
me beareth witness of me.
John 8:19- Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered,
Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have
known my Father also.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:17-18) – The Teacher reminds them that the law allows the testimony of two men to
establish truth on matters unknown or unwitnessed by others. If the testimony of men can
establish truth, the Son of God (God actively present on Earth) declares that His word and the word
of the Father (God actively present in Heaven) have a greater authority than the words of men.
(John 8:19) – The rebuttal of the Pharisees further questions His authority, asking Him: “Where
is thy Father”? The Messiah responds strongly with another truth, expressing that they cannot
know the Father (God actively present in Heaven) because they do not know Him.
John 8:20- These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the
temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
John 8:21- Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall
seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
John 8:22- Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith,
Whither I go, ye cannot come.
John 8:23- And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above:
ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
John 8:24- I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye
believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
