P. 93
John 8:10- When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman,
he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man
condemned thee?
John 8:11- She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I
condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:10-11) – When the Rabbi rises from the ground a second time the woman is standing
alone. He asked her to account for the accusers that were no longer present. The accused
woman says: “No man, Lord”, meaning that there were no men able to stand in His presence to
accuse her.
In the presence of the son of God no man can stand to accuse those He is prepared to defend.
There is an accuser of the brethren, Satan; the voice that stands as a legal complainant against
humanity for its debt to sin. (Rev. 12:10) The son of God defends humanity, standing in their
stead to settle the consequential debt of sin. Jesus Messiah declares if men confess to the truth
about Him on earth that He will confess (testify) on their behalf before the angels of God. (Mark
12:8, *Rev. 3:5)
The Rabbi informs the woman that He will not condemn her; speaking about that moment and
into the future. He tells her to go; meaning to travel moving forward, away from that moment
in her life. She is admonished to sin no more. The Teacher acknowledged that she like all
others is guilty of sin.
To sin no more is not an impossible command for her to never again fail to meet God’s
standard. The word sin comes from the Greek word “hamartia” which means to miss the mark,
or the segment of the path intended for travel. The emphasis is not upon misdeeds but upon a
missed path.
God orders the steps or path for a man to travel and if he misses the path it will impede his
journey towards eternal life. Sin is a hindrance to finding life. The path a person takes will
make them vulnerable to the deeds adjacent to that path. The path that leads to life and
another that leads to death are pre-set; the path a person chooses to take is self-determined.
(Deut. 30:19)
John 8:12- Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the
world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the
light of life.
Lesson Notes:
(John 8:12) – “I am the Light of the world”, is the second of eight “I am” declarations listed in
John’s gospel. The declaration reconnects to John’s expression in the opening chapter that
describes the superior characteristics of the eternal nature of God. John the Baptist was sent to
be a witness of the true light (illumination of truth and life), had come into the world. (John 1:8)
The Baptizer declared that His light illuminated the life of every man that would come into the
