John 7:40- Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying,
said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
John 7:41- Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come
                                                      out of Galilee?

John 7:42- Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of
David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

John 7:43- So there was a division among the people because of him.

               Lesson Notes:

(John 7:40-43) – The Messiah presenting Himself as the source of spiritual water was
compelling, creating a division in the listening audience. Many were persuaded to only believe
He was a prophet; an assessment made by the family elders that consumed the fish and loaves.
               (John 6:14)
Others accepted Him as the Christ in opposition to the third opinion in the divided audience
that disqualified Him because He was Galilean. Residents of Galilee were generally looked
down upon by Judeans because of their lack of education and social influence. Mary gave birth
to the Messiah in Bethlehem, but his homestead was established in Galilee. (Matthew 2:22,
Luke 2:4) Those that supported Him as Messiah pointed to the prophetic writings that affirmed
               His nativity.

The criteria used by the supporters and dissenters was all based upon valuations important to
them, overlooking completely, the Messiah’s apologetic that aborted all human observations
including the rationale of birth order genealogy.

                   • Each group missed the trilogy of claims that Jesus presented to them and that John’s
Gospel is intent on pushing forward:
He: “knows him”, God in Heaven. (The Father: God actively present in Heaven) He has always
been aware of the one who sent Him.
                   • He: “is from him” God in Heaven. (The Father: God actively present in Heaven) He in comes out
from/beside; Him making qualified by the His position or place he has with him because
they are one and the same.
                   • He: “is sent him” God in Heaven. (The Father: God actively present in Heaven) He is set apart
and sent out (apostello). He is God and God-sent.
