Pierce Terrace Elementary School
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USASCE) and the Department of Defense Education
Activity (DoDEA) selected Poettker Construction and FGM Architects to provide design-build
services for a replacement elementary school at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. The existing
elementary school has exceeded its useful life and does not comply with current energy, life
safety, security and building standards. The replacement school is located to the south of the
existing school, which will remain occupied and operational throughout construction.
A new 73,928 sf Pre-K – 2nd grade school is designed to complement and integrate into the
surrounding residential community. Located on the eastern portion of the site, the new school
provides easy access from the local road and adjacent base housing and has a clearly identified
building entrance.
The single story elementary school for 325 students is 40% larger than the existing school. 21
st
century learning environments include a commons area, grade level neighborhoods, multi-
purpose spaces, a secure entrance, ubiquitous technology and sustainable features including a
wind turbine and an energy dashboard for use as a teaching tool.
