Main Gymnasium
Sherlock Elementary School
This proposed elementary school is a direct response to providing 21st Century learning environments
on a small, dense, urban site. The edge circulation – stacked neighborhood cluster concept for the
school begins with the idea of providing daylight to all spaces because of the transformative power
of daylight in an educational environment. Moving the traditional double loaded corridor out to the
perimeter provides natural light into the circulation space. The linear corridor is then interrupted by
double height learning commons/maker spaces around which flexible learning studios are grouped.
Two stories of classrooms are stacked around these learning commons/maker spaces. The flexible
learning studios have windows on the exterior wall and to the learning commons/maker space. The
ground floor is occupied by a secure entrance, administrative offices, early childhood flexible
learning studios (Pre-K and K), a cafeteria/multipurpose room and gymnasium. The second and third
floors are occupied by two stacked learning neighborhoods (grades 1-3 and 4-6) grouped around
the learning commons/maker spaces.
