Wayne City Community Unit School
The project involved the demolition of the existing three-story school, followed by the construction
of an 80,000 square foot school on the same site. The new school reflects the character of the
other schools and further strengthens the physical identity of the district. The exterior relates to the
neighborhood context while finishes reflect the District’s high standards for durability and low
maintenance. A media center/library on the third floor has views overlooking the community and
abundant clerestory daylighting from above to enhance the quality and significance of this
learning space. A secure entry with passive safety/ security elements includes laminated glass
near the primary entry points, ornamental bollards for separation from traffic and clear visual sight
lines between the administration area and the main entry. Additionally, children can safely play
on their new playground located away from parking. A separate bus drop-off maintains safety
and security.
