P. 6
On the next days after the introduction, I have now the classes on my own hand. I
have to device some routine to get these senior high school students to at least like me
at first then like the subject. I have handled six classes namely: HE-A, HE-B, ABM-A,
ABM-B, STEM-A and STEM-B. Each will have different approach expectedly even on
same strands.
The challenge I have to face is with students that don’t really like math especially
those from Home Economics strand. They are not that rude but you can see that some
of them are not really interested with the subject. Some are sleepy and others just don’t
pay attention. But luckily, there are just a handful of these kinds of students. So, I have
set a goal that after my internship, at least half of these students will be interested. One
another challenge that hit me is that sometimes the time is not enough to finish a lesson
so I need to revise my strategies.
What I found amazing about teaching is you have to have a good
relationship with the students and I think I don’t lack that much in that area. I establish
good relationships with most of them. Sometimes we even ride the mini bus home
together and sometimes we get to eat some snacks together at break time. Some of them
also share personal problems with me and some also share just random stuff that they
appreciate or find funny. I feel like I’m their big brother and I appreciate since I am the
youngest sibling. You will also experience a lot of confessions that they have a small
crush on you and they will tease you. Sometimes they did it during our lesson and what I
do is just catapult from it to the next discussion, so we did both have a good laugh and a
memorable lesson. I don’t understand a lot of these for now and I hope that as time goes
by, I will become more acquainted with it and respond accordingly.
The most fulfilling part of this journey is when those students that I told you that
was not interested at first on Statistics, now have been really interested. And these came
from Home Economics classes in which they care much more on pastries and cooking
than any other subjects. I have students, boys, that at first was not really listening when I
deliver my lesson but this time came after some massage that they are getting perfect
scores on exams, exercises, quizzes and seat works. I have one that their classmate
thought was poor in math, his seatmate uses to tutor him when we have seat works, but
it came a time that he does not need tutoring anymore and what’s more shocking is he
get it faster than his peers. And more to add to the shock is he now even teaching those
who once tutoring him to get the lesson. I have also students who openly sleep in my
class, these are girls at the back, but it also came a time that they actively participating in
board works and doing their seat works. Their performance also gotten better on both
written and oral. Also, one of them become like really want to answer every time ask a
question or give a problem. She has gotten perfect scores in examination and did the
