Fleet 8 Miami, Florida
Biscayne Bay, 1994
Fleet Captain: Doug Hanks
In 2023, Fleet 8 continued to boast some of the
most active sailing vessels on Biscayne Bay
through our home port of the Coconut Grove
Sailing Club and its adult instructional program.
A growing number of graduates also took out
the Club’s Ensign fleet for cruises, a welcome
development.
Fleet 8’s private Ensign owners also had a busy
year, participating in many Biscayne Bay
events, including the Barnacle Society’s
Washington’s Birthday classic-boat regatta and A Fleet 8 Ensign
the Sailing Club’s 25-mile cruise to Pumpkin heading down
Key for an overnight rendezvous (representing Biscayne Bay for an

Ensign owners Richard Crisler (Butterfly, Hull # 1613) and Doug Hanks
(Echo, Hull #995) enjoyed some intra-Fleet synergy when Richard
agreed to crew on Echo for the CGSC’s Moonlight Series races. There
were fun times and respectable finishes.
Fleet 8 also had a bit of a celebrity sailor
moment when YouTuber Sam Holmes
joined Echo for an afternoon sail and
documented his cruise on his popular
channel, Sam Holmes Sailing. Sam
sailed a 23-foot Ranger solo from
California to Hawaii in 2019 and now is a
Pearson fan after sailing to Europe in his
Cape Dory 28.
