Makes 10 pinwheels

“The great pressure of the wind on every side of the house raised it up higher and higher,
until it was at the very top of the cyclone; and there it remained and was carried miles and
miles away as easily as you could carry a feather.”

This version features pepperoni, but you can substitute crumbled sausage, fresh basil, ham
and pineapple, or many other pizza toppings—as long as the pieces are diced small enough
that you can still easily roll and cut the pastry dough. Just be aware that the addition of extra
colors may make the pinwheel design harder to see.

                INGREDIENTS

                For the Pizza Sauce

                 ¼ cup water

                 3 tablespoons tomato paste
                 1 clove garlic, minced

                 ½ tablespoon butter

                 ½ tablespoon olive oil
                 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar

                 1 teaspoon sugar

                 ¾ teaspoon oregano
                 ½ teaspoon onion powder

                 ½ teaspoon paprika
                 ¼ teaspoon salt

                 ⅛ teaspoon pepper

                For the Pinwheels

1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed

                 ½ cup diced pepperoni slices
                 ¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash
