History Year 3 and Year 4

                                 DEVELOPMENT OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

                                               FORTS AND WALLS

        Truth to Teach

Psalm 18:2a ‘The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my defender.’

Isaiah 60:18b ‘..but you will call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.’

Proverbs 14:26 ‘He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his
children it will be a refuge.’

 The further development of the Roman Empire through the building of forts and walls

 Queen Boudicca’s revolt against the Romans

 Protection in the Kingdom of God

        Way to Work

        1. Review the previous lessons.

        2. Show the children a model or pictures of a Roman fort and Hadrian’s Wall. Discuss

the need for defence as the Britons did not want the Romans ruling their nation.
Refer to Queen Boudicca and her revolt against the Romans.

        3. Let the children conduct their own research on forts and walls for part of the lesson
so that they can complete the first worksheet.

            5. Gather back to talk about Kingdom forts and walls, referring to the verses above.
Talk about Nehemiah building the walls of Jerusalem and the need for builders and
warriors. Give time for them to complete the second worksheet or give it for

                   homework.

            6. Ask them:-

                       a) Who is our enemy as Christians?
                       b) How does he attack us?
                       c) How can we defend ourselves against him?
                       d) What sort of weapons can we use?
