               Way to Work

               1. Review the previous lessons through question and answer.

               2. Let the children try to imagine what Britain would have been like before
               the Romans arrived. Ask questions:-

                              a) What would the homes have been like?

                              b) How would people have travelled about?
                              c) Would there have been any roads?
                              d) Would there have been large towns and cities?

               3. Before the lesson dress up some children in tunics as Roman road-

builders. Give them groma-like instruments (see picture 1 on the worksheet)
with buckets of stones and some spades. Let them enter the room and begin
creating a short section of road on a piece of cloth/polythene. Alternatively,

build a stretch of road outside. Follow the pictures on the worksheets as closely
               as possible.

               4. Have cards with more information about Roman roads hidden around the
classroom for the children to find to help them to complete their worksheet.

Less able children could sit at their desks and pull the answers from a box.

               5. Gather at the end of the lesson to review and talk about the importance
of the roads for the spread of Christianity.
