DEVELOPMENT OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE
ROMAN TOWNS
Truth to Teach
To compare Roman and modern towns.
Way to Work
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Divide the children into twos or threes to read through the first worksheet.
3. Gather back to further consolidate the information through questions and answers.
Talk and show pictures or a DVD/video of Roman baths, amphitheatres, etc.
4. Compare a modern town with a Roman town.
Eg Roman Modern
Amphitheatre Cinema
Baths Swimming pool
Straight roads Winding roads
Forum Market place
Temple Church
Basilica Town hall
5. Let the children look in books and on the internet to gather information to complete
the worksheet. Give guidance on how to gather and record information.
Some of the work could be completed as Creative Writing in an English lesson or for
homework.
Learning for Life
The children will begin to realise the positive influence the Romans have had on Britain.
They should also be learning study skills as they conduct their own research.
