ROMAN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Equipment
Candles, foil trays, knitting needles, wooden or card slates, sheeting for togas, belts, pins,
abacus, pencils, pens, ink, small stones, three balls, reference books on the Romans.
Activity 1
Dress up in togas. Put on a belt then put a length of sheeting over the left shoulder and tuck
the corner into the belt. Wrap the other end round the back, up and under the right
arm and over the left shoulder. Pin in place.
Activity 2
Melt the wax of a candle on a tin-foil dish then pour it over a wooden or card slate. Let it
set, then let the children use knitting needles to write their names in the wax.
Activity 3
Play ‘Jacks’ using five stones. Put four on the ground then toss one stone and while it is in
the air, try to pick up another stone. Hold this stone in your hand while you toss the first
stone again and try to pick up another stone. This is continued until all the stones are in
your hand. Reverse the game by putting one stone down at a time whilst throwing another in
the air.
Activity 4
Try writing with pens and ink. A menu could be written for a banquet on a scroll of paper.
Reference books will be needed to gather ideas for suitable food.
Activity 5
Juggle with three balls. Stand three children a triangle, each with a ball. On a signal, each
one throws it to the next child who tries to catch it and throw the ball at the same time.
