History Year 3 and Year 4
Truth to Teach
To appreciate the power and influence of the army in the spread of the Roman
Empire.
To give further teaching and experience in personal research.
2 Timothy 2:3 ‘Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.’
Way to Work
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Dress a child in Roman armour or show pictures or a DVD/video of Roman soldiers.
Ascertain how much the children already know about army life in Roman times.
3. Equip the children with books, pictures, internet access, etc to research Roman army
life. Give clear guidelines about how to gather and record information.
4. Gather back after a set time to talk about their research and the weapons the Romans
used, eg ballista. Show pictures of the army under their shields like a tortoise – the
testudo. Some children may like to make a ballista in CDT lessons or design their own
weapon.
5. Contrast life in Jesus’ army with Roman army life. Refer to 2 Timothy 2:3-4.
Learning for Life
The children will have seen the differences between a Christ-led army and the often cruel,
forceful Roman army. They should have gained further skills and experience in conducting
their own research.
