Science Y3/Y4 – Water – week 2
WATER AS LIQUID
Truth to Teach (Source)
To learn that water can exist as liquid, solid or gas. This can be used as a picture of Father
God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as the Trinity.
To perform an experiment to show that water always finds the lowest level. Compare this to
Jesus’ command to us to be humble.
To show that the surface of water is horizontal however a vessel is tilted.
To compare the densities of various liquids.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the last lesson.
2. Show the children some ice, a glass of water and a boiling kettle with steam. Ask them
which is water.
3. Talk about water as liquid, solid and gas and compare this to the Trinity.
4. Explain that we are looking at water as a liquid today. Let the children work in pairs to
write down as many liquids as they can in a set time.
5. Gather back to share.
6. Explain that we are going to perform experiments which should help us learn more about
water.
7. Select about six children to hold a container and let one child pour water in each until
they are about half full. Let each child tilt their container in different directions and to
different degrees. Ask the class what they notice about the surface of the water in each
container. Talk about the water seeking to get to the lowest level. Compare this to
Ephesians 4:2 – taking the lowest place as Jesus did when he washed his disciples’ feet.
8. The children may copy up the results of this experiment before returning to perform the
next one.
9. Pour some oil, water and syrup in equal quantities into a transparent container Shake it
then let it settle. See which one is at the top. Explain the word ‘density’. (Syrup, water,
oil). The children could copy up the results of this one.
