Science Y3/Y4 – Water – week 1
WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE!
Truth to Teach (Source)
To appreciate God as the creator of all the water on the earth.
To read about Jesus, the Living Water.
To look at the basic characteristics of water.
To compile a list of the uses of water in our lives.
Way to work (Means)
1. Read and discuss the account of the creation of water in Genesis 1:1-9. Remind the
children that God has not continued to create water but it is ‘recycled’. Remind them of
the water cycle.
2. Let the children look in atlases to see the oceans, lakes and rivers then let them estimate
what fraction of the earth is covered by water (Two thirds).
3. Read the following poem and ask the children if the statements are true. List the basic
characteristics of water. (Boiling point, freezing point, liquid, solid, gas, etc)
Water has no taste at all,
Water has no smell.
Water’s in the waterfall,
In pump and tap and well.
Water’s everywhere about;
Water’s in the rain,
In the bath, the pond, and out,
At sea, it’s there again.
4. Compile a list of the uses of water in pairs, or as a class. (Washing, cooking, drinking,
swimming and other water sports, baptism, for transport, home for plants and animals, etc.
65% of our bodies are water.) Stress that every living thing needs water to exist.
5. Read about, and discuss, Jesus, the Living Water in John 4:4-15.
6. Complete the worksheet.
7. Gather to review the main teaching points of the lesson.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
It is hoped that the children will gain a sense of wonder at God’s creation of a seemingly
ordinary substance like water. They should know the basic characteristics about water. Jesus
as the Living Water will hopefully carry more meaning as they realise the vital importance of
water to every living thing.
